How Can You Use Telegram Without A Cell Phone Number?

April 5, 2023 by YourTechnoCrat Team Leave a Comment

Telegram is an instant-messaging service that you can access for free. Launched in 2013, one of the reasons behind its popularity is its end-to-end encryption.

But if you want to minimize the use of your private number in the online world, you’re probably hesitant about using it. Although Telegram requires a number for registration, there are ways around it. Learn more about them in this post.

Why does Telegram require a phone number for signups?

Like most sites and apps that deal mainly with communication, a phone number is required nowadays. Telegram, in particular, will ask one of you for the following reasons:

1.  Spam accounts are a constant danger to communication apps

To be clear, no app is perfect. A few spam accounts will still make it into the system. And thanks to the built-in security features of Telegram and its Report function, they’re eliminated from the platform.

But the reason their numbers are manageable without much intervention is phone numbers are required. This allows Telegram to authenticate your identity. It also prevents anyone from establishing your Telegram identity using the same number.

 2. It’s essentially a virtual phone on its own

And with a phone, you need a virtual number. Think of it as how you’d need a sim card to make local calls. The same logic still applies to this software.

Telegram lets you call, text, video call, and many more! By using their app, you can see how they’re extending the existing uses of your regular phone by giving you more powerful functions.

3. It’s a small ask for the convenience it gives you

Telegram is more than just an app. Did you know you can also text using the web browser or installed software on your laptop? This way, you would be able to communicate with your Telegram contacts even if you don’t have your phone with you.

Plus, it’s free to use. As long as you have an internet connection and are logged into Telegram, you’d be able to text anyone you want.

How can you get a Telegram account without a phone number?

There are three main ways by which you can get into Telegram without using your phone number. Here, we’ll also explain to you why getting a temporary number from telecom providers like Telnum is your best option in doing so:

1. Use your landline number

Although this is still technically a phone number, the term phone number itself has now been mostly used to just mean cell phone numbers. Besides, who even thinks of landlines when they think of linking them with apps?

Using these poses certain challenges:

  • Landline numbers are even more precious than your cell phone number. It’s relatively easier to change your mobile number or put it on silent so you’re not disturbed by calls and texts. For this reason, your landline number should be even more protected.
  • Nobody uses landlines anymore. If you’re part of the younger generations, chances are you don’t have a landline in your home or apartment. It doesn’t make sense to get one just for Telegram.
  • You might just be waiting for your landline subscription to expire. This means if you change your phone after the fact, you won’t be able to get back into your account.

2. Use a free number app

Another approach that people use is signing up for a free number app. There are many to choose from, so if you want to go with this option, completing your signup would be easy.

But with any product or service that’s free, it means that you’re the product. Also, they have no responsibility to keep you secure because you’re not paying for it. Most importantly, how sure are you that you’d be able to access the same number if you change your phone?

Because of these problems, they become a less-than-ideal option for verifying your account.

3. One-use VoIP numbers

One-use numbers are kind of like burner numbers, except you don’t have to buy the phone that it comes with. It’s very cheap, but once you use it, the number expires.

There may be various methods by which providers make this happen. But for Telnum, the verification code would be sent to the web platform. No need to do or download anything else.

Should you lose your device, you may also reactivate the same number for verification again for a small fee. You can get a number for as low as a dollar.

A temporary VoIP number is your best option if you want to access Telegram and everything that it has to offer. It’s secure, cheap, and convenient. If you’ve already used your regular number for your account, it’s not too late! Just go to settings and choose Change Number. Enjoy heightened privacy and security starting today!
